Venezuela earthquake update: Death toll climbs to 188

LA GUAIRA, Venezuela — The death toll from the twin powerful earthquakes that struck northern Venezuela on Wednesday evening (Thursday morning , Philippine time) has risen to at least 188, while around 1,500 people have been injured and thousands remain missing, authorities said. Rescue teams continued searching through collapsed buildings in the country’s northern coastal region as officials warned that the number of fatalities could still increase.

More than 200 people are believed to be trapped beneath the rubble. The earthquakes, measuring 7.2 and 7.5 in magnitude, are among the strongest to hit Venezuela in more than a century.
